How to Avail Free Legal Aid in Malaysia?

Whether you are rich or poor, you need to find a lawyer for whenever you find yourself in trouble with the law. It could be that you are falsely accused of something or it could be that you’ve indeed committed a crime and you wanted to defend yourself.

An attorney can do two things for you. One, they can offer you legal advice to help you know what to do with your case. Second, they can be your legal representative and will attend court proceedings in your behalf.

That being said, legal services are not exactly cheap. In fact, they are quite expensive, which is why poor people rarely have the financial capability to get an attorney.

Fortunately, the Malaysian government will be able to grant you free legal aid services, provided that you pass their tests.

Bar Council Legal Aid Center

The first place that you need to go for whenever you need free legal advice and legal representation is the Malaysian Bar Council. They provide you with such services since they are subsidized by the different lawyers that make up the organization.

That being said, what you need to do would be to go to any of their offices and they will walk you through the entire process. They may give you certain tests that will let them know if you indeed do not have the capacity to pay for legal services.

Legal Aid Bureau

The second office that you can go to for free legal advice and representation is the Legal Aid Bureau. Although they grant you free legal aid, you will have to pass certain tests that will also test your capacity to pay for a lawyer (or will let them know your inability to pay).

The first one is called the ‘Means Test’ and this will let them know if you are eligible to get free legal aid services. Keep in mind that this test is supposed to be stringent, so you need to have a lot of patience when taking the exam.

Another advice I could give you is to answer the test as truthfully as possible. Even if you lie on the test just to get free legal services, you will still be found out at a later date and it will put you in a much bigger hole than you were before.

Conclusion

So, if you ever need to find a lawyer but you are unable to pay for your own legal aid services, then you can go to any of the aforementioned offices above.
